Here Be Dragons.... Needle Felted Dragons That Is!

I grew up reading about King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, and... dragons!  Oh how dragons fascinated me!  Small ones, large ones, kind, evil, it didn't matter, I loved dragons!  Luckily today I found a medium to express my still love for the great winged beasts.  Above is Winter Sun.  He flies only on the those rare winter days when the sun sets pink and dances like stars in the bright white snow. He sweeps and swerves in the sky knowing he is but a speck in the glow of the sun. He comes from a rare breed of dragons who make their home in the Northern hemisphere and not only like but thrive in the cold frigid temperatures.  You can read more about him here.
Next is Wegelagen.  He is a rare breed of German Wall Dragons. Roughly translated, his name means ambush, and that is exactly what he will do. He is a protector. Silent by nature but deadly by force he is meant to deceive any intruders of the house. Be it that sneaky little mouse or the ill behaved dog, Wegelagen will watch over and report back to you all that he sees is amiss. Be careful though.... he is not shy and will gladly tell you when you too have been naughty.  You can see more pictures of him on my Etsy shop here.
This is another favourite that I created.  His name is Bracken and he comes in silently, barely rustling the leaves as he glides through the trees, gently landing on the soft forest floor. He is what the Norse people once referred to as a Foliage Dragon. Unlike his fiery brethren he does not breath fire. This, however, must never be mistaken for a weakness, for foliage dragoons are fierce hunters and do not like to be crossed. Normally shy by nature they are camouflaged perfectly in amongst the vegetation of the wild. More than likely you have come across a Foliage Dragon without even knowing it. That little tickle at the back of your neck while you are walking, that sense that someone is watching you? That, my fine friend, is a Foliage Dragon watching over his Kingdom.
On the more whimsical side is this Book Dragon.  He sits. Hours after hours he sits in silent splendor. He has hidden himself amongst the vegetation on the mighty cliff in which he resides so that no one will disturb his reading. His mind races to keep up with vivid images of King Arthur and the Knights of the round table.  He sits. Hours after hours he sits in silent splendor. He has hidden himself amongst the vegetation on the mighty cliff in which he resides so that no one will disturb his reading. His mind races to keep up with vivid images of King Arthur and the Knights of the round table.
He is enthralled with the tales of noble knights, brave steeds, and lovely maidens. His great ancestors paint the pages with their fiery breath and their tales of glory. He longs to be part of their legacy. He is the keeper of the books, the keeper of legends. He alone is responsible for keeping the tales alive. Some day, perhaps sooner than later, this little brave Book Dragon will inspire great legends of his own. For now he is content with his cliff and his books. What more could a Book Dragon ask for.

These are just a few of the dragons that I've created over the years since I started needle felting so feel free to check out my Etsy shop, McBride House, to see some of these dragons and don't forget to look at the sold section to see more.   And please feel to to custom order a dragon too!  I would love to take your vision and bring it to life!

Pink Christmas

Anybody who knows me knows I love pink.  It's not just a matter of liking it, it makes me happy!
It kind of makes my heart sing...
Like this little guy.  My heart was surly singing a happy tune while creating him!  All those pinks, mauves and purples offset by grey?  Be still my heart.  Click HERE to see this guy on McBrideHouse.
Now while the Santa and Reindeer are a favourite, there are certain shades of pink that make me sing different tunes.  This soft pink Santa is the perfect shade of pink.  I sing like a song bird!  Tweet, tweet!
Or this one... still singing!
See that's me singing away!

This kind of pink normally only makes me hum, but add the purple and the grey?  Singing loud and clear!
This one is more mauve and purple with my favourite grey.  But again, add the soft country blue?  Ta da!  Singing again!
A Wise Man once told me... sing like there's no tomorrow.
Don't forget to check out McBrideHouse to see all these little guys and more!  What's your favourite colour that makes your heart sing?

Wonderful Surprise!

I have a certain routine I do every morning when I get up.  You know, feed the cats, turn on the computer, fix the fire, etc, but one thing I do is to check out certain blogs/websites.  Once of these blogs is indinorth, a Canadian indi business collective run by the fabulous Beth.  Well, to my surprise when I clicked on this fab website to see what Canadian Artist was featured, I saw my little owl staring back at me!  What a thrill!  You can check out the post HERE.
Mr Owl is actually the second owl that I made.  The first one (pictured on the right) was made for a special trade order from a fellow Etsian.  Her shop is called VillageBoutique and she makes the most wonderful silverware jewelry from spoons!

I loved the way her owl turned so much that I decided to create another one.  I used a combination of coloured wool that I brushed together to give it a special one-of-a-kind mottled look.  When I finished Mr Owl I realized that the first one was most definitely a Ms Owl!  It always amazes me how using the exact same wool and techniques still leads to a unique soft sculpture.  It really shows me that the wool is the one that does the talking and I'm just the listener.

Saint Patrick's Day at McBride House!

Since I am Irish (could you have guessed that with a name like McBride?) I thought I would introduce you to some of my little Irish friends!  This little frog certainly must be Irish!
Leander the Lion must have some Irish in him somewhere!  I know, I'm pushing that one, but I wanted to show you my newest creation!
Anne of Green Gables is all dressed in her green for the big day!
My little Squirrel wanted me to ask if anybody had any green acorns that he could trade you for!  Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

Spring Bunnies!

I can feel it in the air, Spring is just around the corner!  The snow is melting, there are a few tiny little bulbs poking through the dead foliage of last fall, the maple buds are swelling, the time changes tonight, the sky is blue, the air is fresh, the robins have arrived, geese and duck flying back home, a time for hope and a time for Easter Bunnies!!

Sqweak! I've Been Overrun!

Sometimes something inspires me in so many ways I just don't know when to stop!
For example... for some reason I have mice on my mind.  This is one of my new Sewing Room Mice that is ready to jump in and give me a hand whenever I need an extra set of paws.
He is a very shy little mouse and just likes to sit on top of his wooden spool holding this special vintage button that he's always wanting me to use!
Then there came Cute as a Button Mouse.  Again, this little mouse is insistent that I use this button for something!  I keep telling them I don't need a button on everything!
She's a very helpful little mouse though and is very good at reminding me to do things.  I think it has something to do with that bow that she keeps tied to the end of her tail to remind herself.
The came along my new Companion Series.  These small little mice are so fat and fluffy that all they can do is sit and keep you company while you go about your work.  The Sewing Mice are already listed on McBride House, but the Companion Series are still getting their final touches before they will be listed.  Stay tuned though!

Cats, Felting and Free Patterns!

Piggy still has yet to catch a bird on his own (thank goodness!)... I wonder if he's using osmosis to learn their secrets!  As you can see, his hearing is still not up to par and I was able to capture quite a few shots of him dreaming of birds!  Pretty cute, isn't he?
A little felted Raccoon that's been in my shop for a few days.  I love the little pout that he developed as I was creating him.  I've said it before, but I love the way each creation turns out with it's own special personality!

If you haven't checked out my new site BellaMcBride.ca then you wouldn't have seen that I have a page of free patterns!  Stop on by and see the Belmont Neckwarmer and....

... the Windemere Caplet to just name a few!  Both are very simple patterns and show just how detailed my patterns are.  I really try to create every pattern so that any beginner can follow them.  Check them out!

The Moose is Loose!

I've always wanted to create a Moose to add to my felting collection and finally "felt" that I was ready for the challenge.  When I was working in the field as a botanist, I had the opportunity to work in an area that was virtually overrun by moose.
They are really the most magnificant animal you will ever see.  There is such a serene power to them... it's hard to describe.

So with some advice from DH (my resident Forester and avid hunter) I came up with this guy!

And before I even got him listed he was snatched up and will be going all the way to Tennessee!

Fox and Bear Felts

I bought this most wonderful wool last week!  It's Romney Wool and has this lovely reddish brown shade.  It seems to be perfect for not only bears, but foxes as well!  This is Ursula Bear and as you can see, she loves flowers and she has...
...well, she has the cutest little big bum you have ever seen!  She is very proud of it though and I encourage her to love herself just the way she is!
And this is Fabian Fox!  He is extremely shy and likes to just sit and watch the world go by but...
... he does love to sit in the palm of your hand and snuggle!

I think I've mentioned before that I love elephants, haven't I? Well I just couldn't resist felting another elephant for my store.

Junior weighs in at zero pounds and maybe 2 ounces and is approx. 10 cm (4 inches) tall with out measuring his trunk (15 cm (6 inches) from his feet to tip of her trunk), 17.5 cm (7 inches) long!
I was inspired by the great scene in the Jungle Book where Colonel Hathi tries to get all the elephants in line for the Elephant March and the little baby elephant stretches his trunk out for inspection.

You can see his little back foot stretching out to give him more height!

New Venue

I've just spent part of the day setting up my new Artfire store! I've been finding both views and sales on my Etsy site are waaaayyy down and it was suggested to me to try ArtFire.

This is my Artfire homepage. Nothing too special, but it has potential and that's what I'm looking for right now. Apparently if I sign up 12 different friends to ArtFire then I get a lifetime free membership! So if any of you bloggers out there are interested, use this link and don't forget to mention where you heard it from!

On the kitty front, Frosty is getting much more accepting to the two new babies. He's not thrilled about the bigger kitten (that we discovered, after a kitty bath, is in fact a boy!), but he seems to like the little one that is the runt. It's hard to see, but BB (temporary name) is laying right on top of him! Soooo cute!

McBride House is coming along. This is Gallagher, another felted wheeled animal.
